NETS (Nutrition, Education, Tennis Support):
The NETS program is an after-school program that provides a safe, healthy and academic enriched environment for at-risk children between the ages of 10 and 14. It operates in partnership with the Trenton Public School District, the City of Trenton, the PEAC Health and Fitness Club and Princeton University. It runs from October to June, two to three days per week and provides a combination of tennis instruction, nutrition education and academic enrichment in the areas of science, math, literacy and health. In the 2009-10 school year, the program will take place off site at PEAC Health and Fitness Club where participants will have exclusive use of indoor tennis courts, fitness equipment and a fully equipped classroom (e.g, computers, books, etc.). NETS graduates are hired as assistants to work as mentors and tennis instructors. Additional opportunities include field trips to Rider University, Princeton University, The College of New Jersey, Whole Foods Princeton, The Billy Jean King National Tennis Center (US OPEN SITE), and Drumthwacket (The NJ Governor’s mansion). A 24-week curriculum that is connected to the National Standards and is based on Best Practices is taught by a certified teacher. It involves three, 8-week sessions in the areas of literacy, math and health. The curriculum is engaging, relevant and connected to the ideals of Arthur Ashe.
